Let’s unpack a loaf of bread 🍞

Hands holding a loaf of bread: one loaf of bread equals 25 showers’ worth of water

World Food Day encouraged us to think about something we often take for granted: the water behind the food on our plates. Our recent post exploring the footprint of a loaf of bread sparked plenty of interest. Did you see it?

According to the Water Footprint Network, producing an 800g loaf of wheat bread can require around 1,290 litres of water. That’s roughly equivalent to 25 five-minute showers - much of that water is used behind the scenes, from growing wheat and milling flour to baking and getting the finished loaf onto supermarket shelves.

It’s a reminder that water is an invisible thread, connected to almost everything we consume, often in ways we never see. Keep an eye on our social channels as we uncover more of the invisible water footprints behind everyday life.
