A 3,000-year-old lesson

Looking at our dry and salty landscape, our ancestors saw optimism and resilience. Around 3,000 years ago, the falaj was first created to carry water through networks of tunnels and channels from underground sources to farms and communities using gravity alone. It is one of the first innovations in the UAE, was recognised on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2020, and still nourishes our communities today.

But the ingenuity of the falaj was not only in how water moved. The word means “to share fairly”, reflecting a system built around a shared commitment to manage water together.

Today, that same spirit of stewardship and ingenuity continues to guide our approach to water, innovating daily, and exploring new ways to manage, use, and reuse it.
